Martin Grover

Martin is a painter and screen printer based in South London. He studied at Croydon College, Trent Polytechnic and the Royal Academy Schools sometime in the last century. He loved screen printing from the moment he was first properly introduced to it in 1981. From the outset he preferred the reduction method rather than the photographic/transfer processes commonly associated with screen printing. His stencils are created by painting directly onto the screen, using screen block or screen painting fluid. The technique is simple but can become strikingly complex. The resulting prints resonate with many colours. Some of the work reveals a wry, whimsical charm and humour while other pieces whisper of more melancholic, emotional and enigmatic affairs.Largely influenced by the traditions of English romanticism and American/European realism, Martin merges themes and inspirations of musical nostalgia, procrastination, elegiac decay, childhood recollections, poems, short stories, sheds, shelters, wild flowers and lost toys into a compelling array of images.
