Lucy Cooper printmaker 2.jpg

Lucy Cooper

Lucy Cooper was introduced to the joys of screenprinting at Glasgow Print Studio and Glasgow School of Art many years ago and then continued developing her practice at Thames-Side Studios in London. She now lives in Brighton and prints from Inkspot Press studio in Hove. Lucy has exhibited in a number of galleries and group exhibitions throughout the UK. Over recent years these have included the Royal West of England Academy, Tarpey Gallery, Watts Contemporary Gallery, 35 North Contemporary, and Chalk Gallery, with work also selected from open call such as the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, the ‘Small But Mighty’ exhibition at Bankside, the Bainbridge Open, and the Sussex Contemporary. She has been a member of Southbank Printmakers since 2024. A keen photographer, the starting point of Lucy’s prints is invariably a sight she has photographed, either on her travels or in a familiar setting, being particularly drawn to the light and feel of sunny locations and to the organic shapes found in nature. Combining captured images with abstract elements and calligraphic influences, she uses the printmaking process to develop colour and shape while still conveying the original sense of place. ARTIST’S STATEMENT: I'm a Brighton-based printmaker who creates limited edition silkscreen prints. My style is contemporary, stripped back of detail, with a focus on colour and form. The screenprinting process itself both informs and develops my work, encouraging me to deconstruct and simplify the subject in order to focus on the interplay of colours, shapes and negative spaces. I enjoy exploring uplifting and sometimes unexpected combinations of colour and pattern to reinterpret familiar sights.  My subject matter typically comprises imagined or re-envisaged views or still lifes, highlighting organic forms against an abstracted background. I like presenting scenes which evoke memories of much-loved places or objects, inviting viewers to be transported to the calm and warmth of sunny places or be reminded of the beauty of familiar settings.
