Maureen Nathan

Maureen’s work examines memory and the seen. She is concerned with containment, holding, hiding and revealing, often using historical objects as a starting point to explore these concerns. Human presence and historical evidence of use is the theme that runs through all of her work whatever the subject.

Working with a variety of printmaking processes Maureen aims to work as sustainably as possible using non-toxic inks, recycled materials as matrixes, natural linseed oil based lino and even the paper she prints on are ffcuts collected from various print studios. Creating plates from recycled floor coverings and milk cartons these sometimes pass through the press many times to produce layers, embossing and arrangements. This way of working means that many prints are individual, unique one offs!

As an art educator Maureen runs drawing and printmaking workshops from her studio in London and online. She is an active member of the Artist Network initiative at the Royal West of England Academy, Printmakers Council, East London Printmakers, Zea Mays Print Studio, as well as here with Southbank Printmakers. She has been awarded artist residencies at Cill Rialaig, Ireland, JOYA:Air, Spain and Zea Mays Print Studio, USA.
